Amey Secure Infrastructure, a leading provider of integrated facilities services to the public sector, has handed over a new 46-cell accommodation concept building at HMP Kirkham which will help teach independent living skills to those who are nearing the end of their prison sentence.

The concept building project, being overseen by Amey’s Secure Infrastructure Project Team, supports a wider Prison Estate initiative to provide 46 new appropriately designed independent living places - including provision for those with low mobility issues.

The project will provide a normalising environment which is more aligned to living arrangements offenders will experience post-release. It is hoped that this space will help prepare those individuals nearing the end of their sentence, as well as supporting the wider MOJ and HMPPPS strategy to create more safe, modern, and decent accommodation.

Amey’s Secure Infrastructure Project Team has worked closely with local supply chain partners JYM Partnership, Redman and Bispham, Kingswood Building Services Engineers Ltd and Norscot Joinery to deliver the project which utilises a timber framed modular design.

The timber framed modular construction solution was selected to allow many of the build components to be completed off-site. This solution reduced the project timeframe, cost and environmental impact while minimising disruption to custodial services.

Pete Mathieson, Operations Director for Amey Secure Infrastructure, commented:

“We are delighted to be delivering this Concept Building on behalf of the MOJ.  The investment by HMPPS and MOJ will create 46 appropriately designed independent living places - including two for those with low mobility issues. The use of offsite and timber framed modular construction in this project means we are delivering the build in the most sustainable way that not only significantly shortens the build time - but make a positive difference to climate change with the fabrication under factory conditions reducing waste, improving quality and reducing unnecessary travel to and from the site.”
