Amey teamed up with Lightbulb, an award-winning team-building company to build life saving water filters supporting communities in Kenya facing chronic shortages of clean drinking water.
Teams ran an exercise where they worked collaboratively to create water filtration systems specifically designed for use in regions where access to safe and reliable drinking water is limited, combining leadership development with meaningful community impact.
Teams built 17 fully functional water filters. These were later distributed through charity partners, providing access to clean drinking water for an estimated 5,100 people in communities across Kenya over the next couple of years.
Amey Managing Director, Colin Wood, said: “This initiative perfectly captured what social value means to us, strong collaboration with a clear purpose to support the most vulnerable. By working together, our teams were able to deliver something tangible that will make a real difference to communities facing daily challenges accessing clean water, while also reinforcing the values that underpin how we work at Amey.”
Chronic shortages of clean and safe water continue to threaten the lives of millions of people worldwide, with preventable waterborne diseases disproportionately affecting children and vulnerable adults. While Amey’s filters will support communities in Kenya, the Water Works programme forms part of Lightbulb’s wider global initiative to improve access to clean drinking water for communities most at risk.
Amey’s involvement in the Water Works initiative builds on its wider commitment to social value, including its partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award charity to deliver the Step Ahead Pathway programme, which supports young people in prison to gain employment on release.
