The winners of the prestigious national Scottish People and Places awards were presented with their trophies last night, Wednesday 24th February, at a glittering conference dinner in The Macdonald Marine Hotel, by Provost of East Lothian, Councillor Sheena Richardson and John Summers OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful.
Brendan Corish, Network Liaison Officer with Amey, which manages and maintains Trunk Roads on behalf of Transport Scotland, took home the prestigious 'Programme Manager of the Year' award for his efforts in the past 12 months to deliver high quality environments by the trunk roads of South West Scotland.
The People and Places award ceremony and conference dinner is the highlight of a two-day event run by Keep Scotland Beautiful, which this year focused on reducing anti-social behaviour for a safer, cleaner and greener Scotland.
The Programme Manager of the Year is awarded for outstanding performance over the past year. Brendan Corish has been an enthusiastic and dedicated member of the People and Places Programme, representing Amey at People and Places manager meetings, sitting on the National Flytipping Forum, and actively contributing to the Transport Scotland Litter Working Group. He also led Amey to the final stages of the Programme of the Year Award category in 2010.
John Summers OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "We are delighted to present Brendan with Programme Manager of the Year 2009 for the dedication that he has shown throughout the year; supporting many of the Keep Scotland Tidy local and national campaigns to improve the quality of areas by trunk roads in the South West of Scotland.
“Brendan has never taken the easy option and some of the sites which he has co-ordinated the cutting back of vegetation and removal of flytipping from, and then arranged the installation of preventative measures, have shown real commitment to improving some of the worst areas by our trunk roads – including Bogmoor Road in Glasgow. Three further locations were also tackled, with more flytipping hotspots identified for 2010.”
Colin Mackenzie, Amey’s unit manager for south west Scotland said, “Amey‘s engagement with Keep Scotland Beautiful has always provided a very positive platform for us to engage and work with many of the councils who are members of this forum. We are therefore pleased to be nominated for the Programme of the Year award which reflects how seriously we take the matter of litter on our network.
“Equally we are delighted at Brendan Corish’s contribution to the subject of litter, particularly fly-tipping, that’s been recognised in the prestigious award that he has been selected for. His passion to reduce this blight in and around Glasgow has been, and continues to be, very apparent. Amey appreciates the support given to Brendan by Transport Scotland and Glasgow City Council.”
The People and Places Programme supports the delivery of high quality local environments and the awards recognise the contribution that partners have made in achieving this. Reflecting the challenges facing local authorities and the contribution that they have made in the past year, the four award categories were:
