Amey, the support services specialist, announces that Sir Patrick Brown, Chairman of Go-Ahead Group, the transport combine, has been appointed to the Board of Amey as Non-Executive Chairman with effect from 31 March 2004.
Welcoming the appointment, Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said:

Sir Patrick’s career in the private sector encompasses the defence, transport, construction and utilities sectors. He is currently non-Executive Chairman of Go-Ahead Group, which operates rail franchises, bus and airport services. Sir Patrick joined Go-Ahead Group in 1999 and became Chairman in 2002. He is also a Non-executive Director of Northumbrian Water Group plc.
Sir Patrick spent 10 years in industry and management consultancy before joining the civil service in 1972. He was Permanent Secretary at the Department of Transport (DoT) from 1991-97. He became involved in privatisation during the 1980s at the DoT and subsequently moved to the Department of Environment (DoE) to manage the privatisation of the water industry in England and Wales. In 1990-91, he held the post of Second Permanent Secretary at the DoE before returning to the DoT. During his civil service career he was closely involved in policy, PFI schemes and numerous privatisations including those of the National Freight Corporation, the UK ports, the National Bus Company, British Rail, BA, BAA and the ten principal water businesses in England and Wales.
