Signalling

Amey offers innovative and versatile signalling design solutions. Our signalling teams are made up of highly skilled engineers and project managers who have experience on a wide range of technologies and systems from a number of different railways in the UK and around the world.

We can provide alterations to a mechanical lever frame, design the latest safety Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based interlocking solution or design a scheme based the latest ETCS based Digital Railway requirements. Innovation and learning is fully embedded in our methods and this, together with our wide experience and knowledge, enable us to work on both legacy and new technology alike and provide practical and economical solutions to any signalling problem. Our approach is equipment supplier agnostic which enables us to wholly focus on prescribing solutions and delivering designs which fully align with our clients’ long term strategies.

Our experienced signalling design and consultancy teams are located throughout the UK, providing local knowledge of the infrastructure and transport issues, which allows Amey to tailor design solutions to meet the needs of local clients.

We are the forefront of innovation and have just completed the successful commissioning of the UKs first Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) PLC controlled level crossing. The use of COTS components removes dependence on proprietary equipment, drives down unit costs and provides defence against obsolescence. Where level crossings previously required a 17m2 equipment building, a PLC based solution only requires a 0.23m2 equipment case; using fewer components, power and reduced maintenance means that we have developed a solution for the 21st century, whilst reducing carbon and costs significantly.
