Located on the N61 in County Roscommon, St Brigid’s Junction has long posed a significant safety risk, with up to 14,000 vehicles using a layout defined by poor visibility, non compliant gradients, and a history of serious collisions.

At a glance

  • The scheme delivers a safety led redesign of a high risk national secondary road.
  • The design is informed by a data driven approach, using collision history and traffic analysis to target the most critical issues.
  • Junction layouts have been rationalised to reduce conflict points and significantly improve driver visibility.
  • Pedestrian facilities have been enhanced to support active travel and strengthen safe access for the local community.
  • The project incorporates environmentally sensitive design features, including sustainable drainage and low impact construction techniques.

Roscommon County Council appointed Amey to design a comprehensive safety improvement scheme that resolves these long standing deficiencies and delivers a safer, more efficient transport corridor for the local community.

We were appointed to design a safer, more efficient, and community focused transport corridor.

Delivering a safe and efficient transport corridor

St Brigid’s Junction, located on the N61 national secondary road in County Roscommon, has been recognised for many years as a significant road safety concern. The route carries up to 14,000 vehicles per day and serves as a strategic connector between key towns, residential communities, and industrial areas. Despite its importance, the section adjacent to St Brigid’s has experienced a history of serious collisions, including multiple injury and fatal incidents.

The existing road layout presented several critical challenges: closely spaced accesses created unpredictable turning movements; substandard sightlines limited driver visibility; and non-compliant gradients made manoeuvring difficult, particularly in adverse weather conditions. These combined factors resulted in a corridor that was difficult to navigate, posed risks for all road users, and no longer met modern safety expectations.

Roscommon County Council required a solution that would not only address these long-standing safety issues but also improve accessibility, support local mobility, and future proof the junction for growing transport demands. Amey was appointed to lead the design of a scheme capable of delivering a safer, more efficient, and community focused transport corridor.

We shaped a preferred design that delivers meaningful safety, accessibility, and environmental benefits.

A comprehensive solution

Amey’s multidisciplinary design team developed a comprehensive safety improvement scheme tailored to the unique challenges of St Brigid’s Junction. Leveraging expertise in highway design, safety engineering, environmental assessment, and stakeholder engagement, we created a solution that balances safety, functionality, and environmental sensitivity.

The design was shaped through a data‑led approach, using collision history, traffic‑flow modelling, and road‑user behaviour insights to target the most critical issues. Junction layouts were rationalised to simplify turning movements and reduce conflict points, improving predictability and overall driver safety. Alignment and visibility were enhanced through the introduction of compliant gradients and optimised road geometry that meet current national standards. The scheme also strengthens active travel by providing improved pedestrian facilities and safer connections to local homes, amenities, and community services. To support long‑term resilience, the project incorporates sustainable drainage solutions and low‑impact construction techniques that minimise environmental disruption.

Collaboration was central throughout. Working closely with Roscommon County Council, local stakeholders, and the surrounding community, Amey shaped a preferred design that meets regulatory requirements while delivering meaningful safety, accessibility, and environmental benefits.

We are helping Roscommon County Council create a safer, more connected, and future ready road environment.

The desired outcomes

The St Brigid’s Junction Improvement Scheme will deliver significant long term benefits for Roscommon County Council and the wider community. Targeted design interventions are expected to substantially reduce collision risk, improving safety for all road users, including vulnerable groups such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Realigned junctions and new link roads will enhance accessibility and connectivity, offering safer, more direct routes to local homes, businesses, and amenities. The scheme also supports the Council’s wider ambitions for sustainable, safe transport infrastructure by encouraging active travel and improving the overall reliability of the corridor.

By incorporating the latest regulatory standards and best practice, the design ensures long term compliance, resilience, and serviceability. The improvements will reduce future maintenance needs, support economic activity, and contribute to a safer, more efficient regional transport network.

Through this project, Amey is helping Roscommon County Council create a safer, more connected, and future ready road environment that enhances community wellbeing and strengthens regional mobility.
