Amey’s streetlight management system has delivered a 75% reduction in carbon emissions and cost savings of £3.6 million as well as significant community benefits in Edinburgh.

Delivering the citywide street lighting upgrade scheme involved replacing more than 56,600 streetlights and retrofitting close to 10,000 telecell to LED lanterns over three years.

This environmentally driven project also replaced or installed 1,000 street lighting columns and extended the life of a further 4,500 steel columns by replacing brackets with galvanised sleeves.

Environmental, cost and social benefits include:

  • Carbon emissions down by 75% alongside reduced energy consumption
  • Cost savings of £3.6m in the first year
  • Customer enquiries down from 23,000 to 7,000 during one year
  • Improved community safety and reduced light pollution

The dynamic control system allows for real-time inventory management including monitoring and reporting along with central management and control of lighting levels.
