Streets Ahead is a city-wide highways maintenance contract that is responsible for upgrading and maintaining the condition of Sheffield’s roads, pavements, street lights, bridges and other street furniture, over a 25-year period. The contract is worth over £2bn and will transform the condition of Sheffield’s roads to some of the best in the country. The Core Investment Period ran the first five years of the contract (2012 – 2017), and we’re now into the remaining 20-year lifecycle period to maintain the infrastructure at its improved standard. We also have the ability to develop and improve the service through implementing new solutions, such as the introduction of hydrogen and electric vehicles to reduce our carbon emissions and impact on the local community.
Our local team operate an end-to-end service, undertaking the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor role to meet Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM). With our local knowledge of the area, our designers and operational teams work together to discuss upcoming projects, debating initial design solutions based on local needs and site investigations. The team are clear on their responsibilities, understand the contractual requirements and work seamlessly together to provide a whole-life asset management approach to Sheffield City Council.

Initial designs are assessed through site investigations, with recommendations made to ensure practicality of the design for the local area and operational delivery. The team can deliver a faster turnaround of designs than working with external designers or consultants, which also saves time and cost, as they can re-issue designs quickly and understand the process for design approval. Working collaboratively, we have regular conversations and facilitate opportunities to make improvements so we’re continually learning and adapting our offer.
