Amey marked National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2026 by delivering a new AI workshop experience for apprentices, reaffirming its commitment to developing the next generation of talent.

This year’s theme, Skills for Life, reflects the rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and the growing need for digital capability across every role in the economy.

As part of NAW, Amey hosted a hands on innovation experience at its new Innovation Studio, a dedicated space where teams experiment with emerging technologies and develop solutions that deliver better outcomes for clients and communities. The event brought together 25 apprentices from across the business for a full day of practical learning. Working alongside Amey’s AI and Innovation team, apprentices were introduced to the fundamentals of Agentic AI and challenged to design and build their own AI agents.

The session also featured insights from external partners, including representatives from Microsoft and BPP, who shared perspectives on the future of AI in the workplace and the opportunities it presents for productivity, decision making and innovation.

Speaking on the event, Aman Haque Transport Infrastructure Apprentice for Amey, said: “Today was very inspiring and really opened up the realms of AI in a working environment, I have left today with knowledge that is valuable to my role within Amey and has definitely given me the confidence to really use AI as a working assistant.”

Michael Burgess, Chief People Officer for Amey, and former apprentice, adds: “Apprentices bring fresh thinking, energy and ambition into our organisation, and National Apprenticeship Week is a chance to celebrate the contribution they make every day.

“As the skills landscape continues to evolve at pace, it is essential that we stay ahead of what the workforce and our clients will need in the years to come. That is why we are giving our apprentices the opportunity to build practical AI skills that will help them thrive in a rapidly changing world. By equipping them with these future ready capabilities, we are not only investing in their careers but strengthening Amey’s ability to innovate and deliver for the communities we work in.”

Liam Cox, AI Workforce Specialist for Microsoft, said: “We are delighted to have joined Amey for National Apprenticeship Week in their newly launched Innovation Studio. AI skills are becoming essential across every industry, and empowering early career professionals with the ability to build AI agents with M365 Copilot is key to future innovation. It was inspiring to see how Amey’s apprentices embraced these technologies with such curiosity and ambition. It was a pleasure to help equip them with the practical skills and confidence they need to shape a more efficient, connected, and intelligent future.”

Amey’s early careers recruitment season begins this month, with plans to recruit 90 apprentices by the end of 2026. 60 of these roles are currently available. From day one, apprentices will work on live projects across major transport, infrastructure and defence programmes, while developing skills in engineering, quantity surveying, commercial, digital and corporate pathways.

As part of its ambition to become a skills enabled organisation, Amey is also embedding AI skills training across all Early Careers programmes to ensure every apprentice and graduate gains confidence using AI tools to support their work and develop skills aligned to their interests and long term career goals.

Potential candidates can find out more about Amey’s apprenticeship opportunities and application process via the Amey Early Careers website.
