Amey officially opens a new, environmentally sustainable office in Sheffield, marking the completion of the first phase of a major redevelopment project at its Olive Grove depot, delivered in partnership with Sheffield City Council.

The building was unveiled this week by Amey CEO Andy Milner, alongside Kate Josephs CB, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council. The new modular office serves as the operational hub for the city’s highways maintenance services under the Streets Ahead contract.

Designed to exceed local planning requirements and built to the highest environmental standards, the office includes:

  • BREEAM ‘very good’ accreditation
  • Considerate Constructors Scheme ‘Excellent’ rating
  •  At least 10% of energy from decentralised, renewable or low-energy sources
  • Biodiverse landscaping, including living walls and a wildflower roof
  • Surface water management and rainwater harvesting systems

Constructed off-site using modern modular techniques, the building significantly reduces environmental impact, cutting carbon emissions from delivery vehicles by up to 30 per cent, halving energy consumption, and generating 30 per cent of its own energy through photovoltaic panels. An integrated air-to-air heat recovery system further enhances indoor air quality while reducing overall energy usage.

Inside, the office space is designed to foster collaboration and wellbeing, featuring smart layouts and state-of-the-art digital tools. With a projected lifespan of up to 60 years, the building reflects Amey’s long-term commitment to futureproofing public infrastructure, well beyond the duration of the current Streets Ahead PFI contract.

In partnership with Sheffield City Council, Amey also delivered wider community benefits, including resident-maintained planters along Olive Grove Road to support greening efforts in areas unsuitable for traditional tree planting. Residents were also given the opportunity to choose the tree species they wanted, ensuring the initiative reflects local preferences and encourages long-term stewardship.

Commenting on the opening, Andy Milner, CEO, Amey, said: “The opening of our new Olive Grove office marks a significant step in Amey’s journey to deliver greener, smarter infrastructure across the UK. But it is also a milestone for our brilliant team in Sheffield, providing them with a modern, collaborative, and future-ready space that reflects our values and ambitions.”

“This first phase of the depot redevelopment shows what is possible when we work in partnership with local authorities to deliver infrastructure that not only meets operational needs but sets new standards for sustainability, innovation, and long-term value. We are proud to be helping shape a more sustainable Sheffield for generations to come.”

The next phase, beginning in January 2026, will see the demolition of the existing depot workshops and the construction of additional modular facilities, including a new vehicle fleet workshop, offices, and welfare spaces for frontline teams.

By September 2026, the redeveloped site will look fundamentally different, with updated infrastructure that better supports Amey’s operations, its people, and the wider Sheffield community.

Councillor Joe Otten, chair of the Environmental Services and Regulation Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “The new depot cements the Streets Ahead commitment to the environment and sustainability and this building will help us deliver that.”

“This is a real investment for the future as the fully redeveloped site will be handed back to the council at the end of the PFI contract term in 2037.”

“The new buildings have a projected life of around 60 years and so will future-proof the site for the long-term.”

Chris Turner, Managing Director at Integra Buildings, said: “Olive Grove Depot has been a fantastic project to work on. It showcases the vast capabilities of modular construction, and how offsite methods can deliver buildings of exceptional quality and sustainability.”

“We took a fabric-first approach to the building, comprising of sustainably sourced components and materials. It was clear from the outset that sustainability was integral to the project, and that Amey’s values and environmental focus mirror our own.

“We’ve built a strong, collaborative relationship with Amey and partners involved in delivering Olive Grove Depot. We hope Amey’s team enjoy their new home and feel proud to work in a building with exceptional sustainability standards.”

Integra provides bespoke modular solutions to a wide range of public and private sector clients, and this year received a King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, recognising the company’s commitment to environmental excellence across its operations.
