Amey, one of the UK’s leading public and regulated services providers, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local communities by launching a pioneering new partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). The new national agreement will help over 165,000 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in the DofE across the UK.
His Royal Highness, The Earl of Wessex commended the initiative which extends Amey’s 12 year partnership and commitment to the DofE. The innovative programme will identify underserved communities across the UK and grow local DofE provision to help improve the life chances and employability of young people.
Through completing their DofE Award, young people participate in activities such as community volunteering, learning a new skill and taking part in team sports. They also learn leadership, decision making and motivational skills through a challenging team expedition.
Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said: “The new partnership with the DofE will help to make a real difference to lives and prospects of young people right across the country.
“As a business we are delighted to extend our long standing relationship with the DofE to not only support our employees but to support the communities in which we work, particularly those in disadvantaged areas.
“Giving young people opportunities likes these will not only enrich their lives and provide them with long-term career prospects, but will ultimately help to contribute to wider social and community cohesion.”
Independent research commissioned by the DofE Charity has shown that 84% of young people who completed the Award developed enhanced organisational skills and 62% felt that the DofE helped them to make a positive difference to their local community.
Another study demonstrated a 75% reduction in offending behaviour from those undertaking the DofE Award in prisons and Young Offender’s Institutions.
The partnership therefore ultimately aims to provide young people with the skills and personal impact they need to secure employment whilst encouraging them to avoid anti-social behaviour.
Peter Westgarth, Chief Executive Officer of the DofE, said: “We are deeply appreciative of Amey’s unwavering support of the DofE and shared belief that every young person should have the opportunity to start their DofE journey irrespective of background or circumstance. The immense personal and social value that the DofE offers has a significantly positive effect on disadvantaged neighbourhoods. With Amey we can help more young people access the DofE and support their growth into active, participating young adults.”
Amey has worked closely with the DofE for 12 years and across the company offers its apprentices the opportunity to complete their Gold Award. Over 220 apprentices are currently taking part and 36 apprentices have completed the programme to date.
As a business Amey remains committed to investing in its employees to equip them with the appropriate skills to fulfil their potential. Amey also provides all employees with one paid day a year to support a local initiative of their choice.
