Amey’s Journey to Work event proves a success at HMP Hindley

22 January 2026

Amey’s latest Journey to Work (JtW) event at HMP Hindley has resulted in an on the day hire, following a session that supported 15 prisoners preparing for release and employment.

JtW is a core part of Amey’s social value and inclusive hiring strategy. The programme supports people in the final months of their sentence with employability training, CV workshops, interview preparation and guidance on applying for live vacancies across Amey’s highways, rail and facilities contracts, as well as roles within its supply chain.

At HMP Hindley, participants took part in presentations from Amey’s Transport Infrastructure and Complex Facilities teams, breakout discussions, and practical insights into highways operations. Several attendees already held relevant work experience or driving licences, making them strong candidates for roles within Amey and its partners.

Breakout sessions encouraged open dialogue, allowing candidates to connect directly with Amey’s recruitment and operational teams. Participants also heard from an Amey employee with lived experience of the justice system, as well as Strategic Highways Account Directors who shared insights on safety, operations and winter protocols. Feedback from the group highlighted how impressed they were by the scale of Amey, the variety of roles available, and the company’s commitment to employee development.

Steve Knott, Amey Business Director and member of HMP Hindley’s Employment Advisory Board, said: “Working with National Highways and wider partners, we are opening doors, matching transferable skills with real jobs, and providing the ongoing support people need to thrive. The session showed just how much potential exists within the prison system, and how motivated many of the men are to build a new future. It was clear they left feeling informed, encouraged and excited about the opportunities Amey can offer. For us, these initiatives are a commitment to dignity, opportunity and the belief that a fresh start should come with a fair chance.”
