A Streets Ahead gritter has been given the name Archie in recognition of a local charity.

Streets Ahead employees decided to name one of its gritters after Cathedral Archer Project, a Sheffield charity helping the city’s homeless.

The team supported the Cathedral Archer project throughout 2014 in a number of ways, including donating sleeping bags and blankets, collecting food as part of a harvest appeal and helping at events organised by the project.

Rob Allen, Streets Ahead’s Business Director at Amey, said: “We have been committed to helping Cathedral Archer Project throughout 2014 and we’re proud of the support our employees have given over this time using their community days and in other ways.
“To name one of our gritters after the project reinforces our partnership and marks a successful year of working together.”

Cllr Jayne Dunn, Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene, added: “It’s really exciting that one of our gritters has been named after Cathedral Archer Project and will be providing an essential service during winter, helping to keep Sheffield moving.
“Employees have done an excellent job over the past year supporting the project and we know that Cathedral Archer Project have really benefited from their help and share in our excitement at the naming of Archie.”

Tracy Viner, Cathedral Archer Project’s Marketing and Development Manager, commented: “The Streets Ahead team have made a big impact on the Cathedral Archer Project over the last year, spending time volunteering, sharing skills and raising funds. It has been wonderful working with Amey.
“When we found out about Archie we were very excited to have a gritter named after the project and we hope that people spot him out and about helping to keep the roads clear. We are very conscious that if Archie is needed, the people that use our project will need us, so if the people of Sheffield spot him this is a reminder that the homeless need their support.”

The naming comes after 13 of Streets Ahead’s gritters were given names last year by local primary schools. Archie joins other gritters such as Gritgrinder, Snow Catcher, The Bear, Ice Warrior, General Grit and Melter Skelter.
