Staffordshire County Council and Amey worked in partnership to restore the historic, cast iron Chetwynd Bridge, near Alrewas. The Grade II* listed road bridge is the largest surviving pre:1830s cast iron bridge in England and the second largest in the world. ​

OVERVIEW​

Due to the age of the bridge, the project team needed to overcome various challenges, also discovering that the damage to the cast iron bridge was more severe than first thought. Works to the bridge included a careful restoration of ironwork and sympathetic paintwork reinstatement. The installation of a fully independent scaffolding also helped reduce any risks of further damage to the historic bridge. ​

BENEFITS​

  • The refurbishment now ensures the safe use of the bridge to traffic, as well as keeping with its historic status. ​
  • CIHT West Midlands Awards 2023: Winner of the best innovation and environment and sustainability award. Highly commended in the small project award category.​
  • IHE Mercia Branch Award 2023: Winner in the small project award category. ​
  • Taking eight months to complete, the site was also powered by solar energy and batteries, saving a total of 69.7 tonnes of CO2, equating to approximately £48K of fuel. This gave an overall project saving of £40k.​
