The disposal of household waste is a vital service and essential to keeping our surroundings hygienic and clean. Whilst many of us have been at home either working remotely or isolating, the operational teams at Allerton Waste Recovery Park have been on the front line continuing to dispose of York and North Yorkshire household waste in a safe and environmentally sustainable way.
Since operations began in March 2018, carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by over 100,000 tonnes by recovering materials and energy from householders’ waste which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
At Amey we take personal pride in our public service, and we all take responsibility for the contribution we make to society. This means taking care of everyone. Whether it’s our employees, local communities, clients, suppliers or others.
During the pandemic keeping operational staff safe is a priority and all Government guidelines were implemented across the plant including safe distancing measures.
Providing important direction and support, the senior management team attended the plant in rotation, keeping the number of people on site to a strict minimum and reducing the risk of contagion. Using the latest communication technology all personnel on site and working remotely continued to be kept informed and up to date on developments and, were able to engage with and support each other - an important contribution to mental wellbeing.
“I am very proud of our key workers. It has been a difficult and stressful time and despite the challenges they have continued to deliver the excellent service we have come to expect from everyone here at AWRP”. Colin Fletcher, Account Director
Until 13 March 2020 Allerton Waste Recovery Park provided tours for schools, community groups and individuals with over 4,000 visitors coming to find out about waste and recycling and to see how the plant operates. These will resume when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, online presentations are available for anyone interested in finding out what happens to York and North Yorkshire household waste. The sessions cover waste and recycling in general with tips on how to manage your waste, a virtual tour of the plant and how waste is disposed of and a chance to raise any queries you may have. More information is available at www.allerton-waste-recovery-park.co.uk or email AWRP.Visitor@amey.co.uk to book a session.
Allerton Waste Recovery Park is operated by Amey on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council and was the first facility in the country to use three technologies – mechanical treatment, anaerobic digestion and energy from waste - on one site.
