Hidden Disability - Sunflower

What is the Sunflower?

80% of disabled people are living with a hidden disability. For some people, this can make it hard to understand and believe that someone, with a “non-visible” condition genuinely needs support.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was created to encourage inclusivity, acceptance and understanding.

Simply by wearing the Sunflower, you’re just letting everyone know that you have a non-visible disability and you might need extra help, understanding, or just more time.

For those that have interaction with someone wearing a Sunflower lanyard it is also a great talking point to start the conversation and explore workplace adjustments and support. Never ask someone what their disability is.

Why have we joined the Sunflower?

As part of Amey's Embracing Difference campaign we want to raise awareness of non-visible disabilities as well as highlight that some employees may need a bit of support, extra time or understanding from their colleagues.

The Sunflower lanyards are an eye-catching way to drawn attention to someone's need for support that otherwise would be invisible to most. Its also a great way to get conversation starting around hidden disabilities. There are so many hidden disabilities it isn't possible to list them all here but please take some time to watch this recent session from some of your Amey colleagues who have been kind enough to share their journeys.
