Personal pride in our public service

Carl Shadrake

Project Manager, Defence

After 14 years in the army, Carl’s always prepared

Carl’s always ready for the big occasion.

Buttons, boots and badges sparkle at Sandhurst’s Sovereign’s Parade – the day that young officers receive their commissions.

Every inch of the Military Academy has to look perfect, and that’s been Carl’s responsibility supported by his team. “We manage the set-up, including the seating for thousands of people, and take a lot of pride in making the grounds look amazing.”

For the rest of the year, they take care of stables, lakes, ancient buildings and sports fields on the 700-acre site, fixing anything from a broken tap to a missing roof tile. It can add up to about 500 jobs a month.

"Having been a platoon sergeant, I’m good at prioritising," says Carl, who served in the Grenadier Guards. He was wounded twice in Afghanistan and given a medical discharge in 2014.

Amey gave him the training he needed to join our Defence FM team and we’ve helped him progress. Carl is now a Project Manager at Sandhurst, handling bigger scale projects, and next year he’ll still be watching the Sovereign’s Parade with pride.
