Would you like to earn while you learn, gain recognised qualifications and make a real difference?

You may not have heard of us, but each day, practically everyone in the UK benefits from a service we provide. If you’ve had a hot shower, taken a train, driven to work or had your rubbish collected it’s quite likely that we helped with it.

We take personal pride in our public service. Our team of 16,000 manages the services we all use and rely on, ensuring every household in Britain benefits from our work.

By being involved in exciting projects, learning new skills and working with a great group of people every day, you’ll get the chance to make a real difference to your career and make positive change to society.

Who are we looking for?

Our apprentices work across every area of our diverse business. From Electricians to Customer Service Assistants, Highways Operatives to Rail Engineers, there is an apprenticeship for everyone. Read more about our apprenticeship levels:

We’re after people who care as much as we do

We’re passionate about ‘doing what we say we will’. We have high standards when it comes to providing the best services and experiences for our customers. Not only that, we also take pride in doing business ethically and sustainably, and in creating positive change for the communities we serve. If you do what you say you will, want to make an impact and believe in providing excellent service, then we want to hear from you.

We’re looking for self-starters

We want people who will take personal pride in public service by contributing to improvements and innovation. We give our people the freedom to perform, promoting original thinking and provide a culture where everyone is empowered to make their own decisions and take responsibility for implementing their ideas, whether small or large.

What’s in it for you?

As well as gaining recognised qualifications, developing valuable skills and earning a great salary, you’ll be on a permanent contract with paid holidays. And when you’ve finished your apprenticeship, we’ve got a guaranteed job waiting for you.

We never compromise on safety. Health and safety is embedded in our working environment and we all take personal and collective responsibility for it, working together to ensure everyone can go home safely, every day.

The benefits you’ll receive include generous annual leave, a contributory pension scheme and life insurance. Our flexible benefits scheme, Amey Choices, offers great money-saving deals. Save on everything from your weekly shopping, to movie tickets and weekends away. You can also opt to buy or sell annual leave, join the cycle to work scheme and get discounted gym memberships.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Business Award

The DofE Award is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with potentially life-changing opportunities and we fully encourage you to accept this challenge!

It will help you develop skills and experiences that you can use in the workplace, such as, communication, team working, leadership, confidence, planning, problem solving and time management.

The DofE Gold Award has five modules that will test you, improve your fitness and teach you new skills. You’ll also get a chance to give back to your community. And we’ll back you the whole way.

Our apprentices tell us achieving the Award has increased their confidence and changed their life.

“The DofE Award is structured, much like the apprenticeship programme. It involves team tasks as well as individual tasks and is varied too, meaning it is continuously interesting. There is always the opportunity to challenge yourself, develop a good work ethic and build a great network of friends and colleagues. All of which is applicable in the world of work.”

Nicky Agimal – DofE Gold Award Holder

Apprentices FAQs

If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch by emailing apprenticeships@amey.co.uk or call us on 01865 713 101.

What’s the deadline for applications?

There is no fixed deadline for applications; we will close the post for each individual role once we have received a maximum number of applications. Our advice is to apply as soon as possible.

Does your apprenticeship programme have an age limit?

Absolutely not! We encourage and welcome applications from all ages. However, for some of our operational roles you’ll need to be over 18, for health and safety reasons.

What if I don’t meet your academic requirements?

Unfortunately, if you don’t have the qualifications we ask for, your application will normally be unsuccessful. If you have special reasons, such as illness, which have prevented you achieving the minimum requirements, then please let us know.

If I’m not successful this time, can I apply again?

Yes of course. All candidates are encouraged to apply again if and when a suitable role arises.

Do I have to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

The honest answer is no, however, if you are under the age of 23.5 on your start date, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for the DofE Gold Award. But it’s a fantastic opportunity so we encourage all eligible apprentices to take part.

What happens at an assessment centre?

If you apply for an apprenticeship, you might be invited to an assessment centre. This is a one-day event that gives you an introduction to our business and more information on our apprenticeships. You’ll take part in a group activity and there’ll be an interview. You’ll also get to meet some of our current apprentices who will answer any questions you might have.

How long will my apprenticeship last?

That depends on the type of apprenticeship you do, but it could be between 1 – 4 years. The job advert will tell you the apprenticeship level and length of the course.

What happens at the end of my apprenticeship?

When you’ve finished your apprenticeship, we’ll have a permanent job waiting for you.
