Fresh Challenge, new opportunity
Amey Consulting’s Highways teams impact the journeys of millions across the UK, by working in partnership with a range of clients and providing consultancy design services for Strategic and Local Highway networks.
Our teams work on both major design projects and local network improvements and undertake services on national to local frameworks; including those with Highways England Area 10,13 and 14 to the A66 dualling programme and the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA).
We are passionate about the highways projects that we design and take pride in seeing our towns and cities thrive by improving connectivity, journey times and quality of life.
The role
We are recruiting an Assistant Geotechnical Engineer. The successful candidate will undertake production of geotechnical designs, working as part of a dedicated Ground Engineering design team. Primarily based in Birmingham, the team provide support to our Highways England contracts across the North West, and our local authority contracts in Stafford and Swindon. Due to the variety of schemes our Geotechnical team work on, the role will have scope to look at the full project life-cycle from conceptual design through to detailed design and on-site ground investigation supervision.
Our team has a number of highly experienced Senior and Principal Engineers so this is an ideal learning platform for someone to develop their geotechnical specialism: perhaps, you are coming to the end of a graduate geotechnical design role, you might be a highways/structures civil engineer with a Geotech bias or alternatively working in a Ground Investigations role on site.
Due to the spread geographically of our schemes, we are open to where this role is based. Ideally this will be in Birmingham or Warrington, but we welcome applications from people based outside of these locations so we welcome conversations around flexible/agile working.
In a typical week you will:
- Assist in the planning and execution of desk studies, ground investigations, outline and detailed geotechnical designs
- Assist with project planning, programming, cost control and administration
- Assist in the management and monitoring of the budget for projects
- Carry out inspection work, feasibility studies, report preparation, cost estimating
- Respond to queries and liaise with clients, third parties and other stakeholder groups
- Prepare design calculations, drawings, technical documents and project reports ensuring compliance with current standards
- Undertake surveys and site supervision duties
- Support the preparation of bids and delivery of services on other contracts, when required
- Assist in the implementation of cost effective and innovative design solutions
We want to hear from you if:
- You have a Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
- You are able to demonstrate limited experience and expertise within the relevant geotechnical field, probably gained in a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer role or equivalent
- You have knowledge of geotechnical software
- You are able to produce technically sound geotechnical engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working under supervision
- You are experienced in following procedures associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
- You are able to comply with technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment
- You have a proven ability to work within a team environment with a dedicated approach to meet project deadlines
- You have good communication skills with the ability to communicate with clients and stakeholders
