Our multi-disciplinary team has helped Heathrow to strategically understand, maintain, and restructure their asset systems.

Heathrow is one of the largest airports in the world, connecting 78 million passengers to 204 destinations and conveyed 1.7 million tons of cargo in 2017. They aim to double these amounts by 2040. In order to achieve these ambitious targets Heathrow Engineering needed help from Amey Strategic Consulting to transform their approach to asset management.

Heathrow's Asset Management System previously contained numerous method statements for maintaining Engineering assets, many of which were redundant, duplicated or included locally modified instructions. Over a series of 200 workshops, Amey Strategic Consulting engaged with internal and external operational teams, allowing for collaboration between stakeholders and to significantly improve their method statement content.

Over two years Amey Strategic Consulting has worked with Heathrow to identify, gather and improve the data that drives intelligent asset management decision making. Using this improved data, Asset Management plans have been uniquely tailored, detailing the optimal investment required to maintain each asset system.

Amey Strategic Consulting were also asked to develop a package of work to help Heathrow monitor their capital projects within engineering. The Heathrow Development Team had poor visibility of capital projects with no holistic view of projects that relate to them. This was a consequence of the software that was holding the project data. Amey proposed to develop a user-friendly dashboard displaying all the relevant information.

537 method statements were consolidated to 276, reducing conflicting and unnecessary work orders. These up-to-date, clear and to the point method statements allowed for reduced maintenance time and cost providing clarity about asset state throughout the team. The Asset Management Plans summarised cost forecasts, key risks, and strategic initiatives necessary for improvement work, all of which is summarised in a concise dashboard. The increased visibility has presented a solid investment case and has significantly improved stakeholder engagement.
