Sheffield Streets Ahead

Amey operates the Streets Ahead Highways Maintenance and Management service across Sheffield, which is one of the UK’s largest local government highways partnerships.

Working with Sheffield City Council, the Streets Ahead contract is a huge city-wide 25 year highway maintenance project that will see Sheffield’s roads transformed from some of the worst in the country to the best in the country within the first five years (2012 – 2017). We will then maintain the infrastructure at its improved standard for the remaining 20 years of the contract.

We are improving and maintaining 1,180 miles of road, 2,050 miles of pavement, 68,000 street lights, 36,000 highway trees, 28,000 street signs, 72,000 drainage gullies, 480 traffic signals, 18,000 items of street furniture, 2.9 million sqm of grass verges and over 600 bridges and highway structures.

We also deliver a street cleaning service which includes the maintenance of 2,500 litter bins and the collection of 500-600 tonnes of waste each month.

Our winter services involve gritting 610 miles of road when temperatures drop below zero, maintaining 1,700 grit bins and treating priority pavements in icy conditions.
