What is your greatest professional achievement?
I’m proud to be the first member of my family to go to University, to attain a degree and become a Chartered Civil Engineer. The focus and discipline required to achieve academic success has stood me in good stead during my working career. I now enjoy working with dedicated, hard-working teams who go above and beyond for business success, embedding sustainable change that results in further success for our teams, clients and wider communities.
What advice would you have given yourself 20 years ago?
Be resilient, take the knocks, dust yourself down and move on, be patient in your career - remember it’s a marathon not a sprint - take some risks and back yourself to succeed. For me, the great industrialist Henry Ford sums up perfectly how much attitude determines success - “ Whether you think you can or you think you can’t - you’re right”.
What are your priorities in your role?
Enhancing our leaders’ focus on delivering for our clients and their customers. Providing effective operational delivery by maximising our productivity and minimising all forms of waste, making sure we measure and control our cost of delivery and maximise our value. I’m looking forward to sharing these priorities with my teams in Transport Infrastructure and Consulting in the coming weeks and months.
What motivates you to come to work?
I get a huge buzz from motivating individuals and teams to excel and celebrate their successes with them. We do so many things in our work - focussing on health, safety and wellbeing, developing smart engineering solutions to problems, delivering quality products and services - maximising the value to our customers and delivering greater shareholder value. That way we have a successful, sustainable business that allows us all to grow.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I enjoy keeping fit by working out in the gym, cycling with friends and skiing with my family. I’m also a committed “petrol head” spending every June with Lads and Dads camping in Le Mans for the 24hr race and of course the F1.
