MD Highways

What’s your greatest professional achievement?

Playing a part in changing the way we place traffic management on motorways and trunk roads, so stopping the need for our teams to have to walk across live carriageways. I’ve seen the life-changing consequences of live carriageway crossings, and I’m determined to prevent these to protect our people. The changes made are now saving over a million live carriageway crossings a year.

What’s the one thing you’d like to change about the highways industry?

As budgets become tighter, we must innovate like never before. I’d like to see greater collaboration across the sector to challenge the norm, focusing more on asset management and whole life rather than the cheapest and/or short-term solutions.

What’s the main challenge that keeps you awake at night?

Snow! While we extensively prepare for snow, the reality is we can be hit by heavy weather at any point with little notice. The success or failure of our reputation can be quickly affected by how we deal with severe weather.

What are your priorities for the next five years?

It goes without saying that we must continue to push Target Zero every day, every week, every year.
I’m also passionate about improving the diversity of our workforce – at all levels, bringing new thinking into the sector and growing Amey’s highways business to be the provider of choice.

What makes you come to work every day?

Even if I won the lottery, I’d still come to work. I love being an engineer, making a positive difference. But most of all, the people I work with, who make it fun.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m a keen rugby fan and a rugby union coach, training the U15 team at Ashby Rugby Club.
