Ian has spent most of his established career in HR, which began in the manufacturing and architectural glass sector for Pilkington. He joined the company as a graduate and quickly progressed into a HR Officer role, responsible for employee relations and employment practices across a number of business units.
In 1989, Ian joined ICI paints where he held a number of roles including heading up HR for Dulux UK. During this role he spent time revamping employee communications, upgrading the HR IT systems and core HR processes leading the company to achieve the prestigious Investors in People accreditation. In his final role at ICI paints, Ian took responsibility for European HR development at the company focusing on post-acquisition integration planning, the development of performance management and compensation programmes and supporting a company wide process reengineering initiative.
After ten years, Ian moved to Chesapeake Corporation, as Group HR Director, which had operations across seven European Countries, South Africa and China. During this time he focused on supporting the business’ strong acquisition agenda and growth strategy and successfully standardised group-wide HR policy, structures and capability development programmes.
In 2004, Ian joined Carlsberg Group, initially in their UK business. During his eight years at the company Ian was heavily involved in defining the company’s customer ethos and culture and building employee engagement. He also became Chairman of the Trustee Board for a £350m final salary pension fund during a period of significant challenge and change for pension schemes.
His final role at Carlsberg saw Ian take up the position of Vice President for HR in Western Europe. The role took him to Copenhagen where he spent three years leading changes in talent and performance management as well as driving initiatives to improve the company’s commercial capabilities and creating a customer centric ethos across ten European countries.
Prior to Amey, Ian was a partner at April Strategy LLP, where he worked with organisations, across the public and private sector, to define and embed their values, create customer focused business strategies, and ensure employees were engaged with the organisation’s direction and purpose.
