A5117 Contract

The A5117 Deeside Parks Junctions Improvement is design project to improve 4.9km of road. The work will facilitate the drive to ease congestion at an important trans European network traffic route to Wales and the port of Holyhead. The project is an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) scheme for the Highways Agency.

The work involved will cover 4.9km of line improvement including; extensive including a grade separation of three junctions and the provision of footway, cycleway and bridleway between Deeside Park interchange and the existing A5117/M56 junction.

Our role has included the development of the conceptual design into the preliminary design for the purposes of the statutory process including; traffic surveys and forecasting, economic analysis, road safety audits, consultations with third parties, preparation of line, side and compulsory purchase orders, preparation of proofs of evidence and provision of expert witness at the public inquiry.

A number of key features of the scheme have been addressed during the design work. The management of cross border issues with the Welsh Assembly Government has been resolved using an adoption of different design standards across the scheme.

A number of new facilities such as a new over-bridge and a Pegasus crossing have been designed along the whole length of the scheme to ensure safety and ease of crossing for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians.

Furthermore, we have considered the impact on the environment and wild life by including a 21km of special newt fencing to protect the Great Crested Newts prior to the works commencing and ensuring pollution protection, through the design of drainage outfalls to a two-pond drainage system.
