The challenge

Amey’s Scottish projects and facilities management team in Glasgow have been providing services across the city’s schools estates since 2000. In early 2022 Amey was approached by Glasgow City Council who highlighted capacity issues at St Andrew’s RC Academy and St Mungo’s Academy.

Glasgow has experienced a high volume of residential development over recent years, and this has resulted in additional pressure on local resources and educational facilities.

The Council were looking for adaptable space for an additional 300 pupils across both sites, that would provide improved building fabric as well as added value components such as reduced energy usage and emissions. However, without  additional land to build on, the Council required a solution to develop on existing sites.

Amey’s response

Amey worked collaboratively to create a turnkey modular solution, which involved all elements of design and build – including procurement and scheduling of an off-site fabrication. The facilities included six new classrooms at St Andrews RC Secondary School with a further four at St Mungo’s Academy.

Ground investigations, tree clearance, topographical surveys, and GPR surveys were all undertaken beforehand to inform design.

Each classroom has the capacity to house around thirty pupils and their teachers, and are fully equipped with washroom facilities, toilets, and storage areas. The inclusion of an independent electrical supply has allowed for each unit to be fitted with energy efficient LED lighting solution and motion sensor lights reduce energy consumption and emissions.

In addition, all sites are fully DDA compliant, with the installation of suitable access arrangements and toilet facilities to ensure the building is accessible to everyone, regardless of their mobility.

Outcomes

  • Pupils and staff have a high-quality space in which they can learn and thrive
  • Enabled both schools to increase their student intake
  • Site works commenced June 2022 and all works safely and successfully delivered, allowing additional accommodation to be used in August 2022
  • Amey is now looking to support the pupils and teachers throughout the Glasgow school estate to create multi-sensory community garden facilities
