Overview
As key contractor on the Kentish Town Track Stabilisation project, Amey was in a unique position to support Network Rail’s ambitions for a low emissions railway as well as its own sustainability targets. Our aim was to drive carbon reduction at every stage and to demonstrate carbon reduction over the lifecycle of the project which included repairing a track slab) and replacing a concrete track slab with ballasted track.
We calculated embodied carbon and capture carbon reductions across six key areas, including:
- Materials - embodied carbon and transportation to site
- Waste - embodied carbon and transport
- Fuel use - onsite plant and equipment as well as employee travel Fourteen significant changes were made to design and construction methodologies to reduce carbon footprint.
We set a 20% carbon reduction target across the design and construction stages of the project.
Benefits
In the event, our innovative approach exceeded this ambitious target, saving 89 tonnes of CO2e, representing a 32.36% carbon saving against the initial design and scope of works.
