The Highways Agency (HA) has awarded leading UK public and regulated services provider Amey a multi-million pound contract to manage and maintain the strategic road network in the East of England.
Under the Asset Support Contract (ASC) for HA Area 8 Amey will be responsible for improving and maintaining routes through Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.

The contract is worth up to £200m over five years and covers more than 500 miles of carriageway.
Amey was also recently awarded the ASC contract in Area 6 (East Anglia) and currently oversees Area 9 in the West Midlands, giving it responsibility for some of Britain’s most important road networks, including stretches of the M1, M5, M6 and M11 motorways.

Both five year contracts commence in April 2014 and have the potential to be extended for up to three years.
Mel Ewell, Amey’s chief executive, said: “The award of Area 8 supports our on-going strategy to grow our market share in this sector.  The Highways Agency is a key client to Amey and this, along with the recently awarded Area 6 contract, strengthens our platform with the agency, providing us with significant opportunities to further develop this relationship and help move the industry forward.”

Amey’s innovative solutions for both contracts will provide a cost effective and flexible service for the HA.  Streamlined processes, better use of technology, cutting edge plant and equipment and collaboration with the supply chain will ensure delivery of the service is fully aligned with HA requirements and government investment is maximised on operational activity.
The contract scope extends beyond routine maintenance to; scheme identification, value management, design and construction of schemes up to £5m; and design and management of schemes in excess of £5m.

The company is experienced in managing large complex projects simultaneously across aviation, central government, utilities, defence, waste, education, local government, rail and strategic highways sectors.
