Amey which manages and maintains the motorways and trunk roads around Worcestershire including the M50 and M5 on behalf of the Highways Agency, has previously won silver but is now the only company in its sector to achieve Investors in People Gold across the whole of its business.

The Gold award celebrates companies that perform significantly beyond the core Investors in People Standard. The Standard provides a solid foundation for further growth and development and is awarded to well-run organisations which meet demanding set criteria, including learning and development, leadership skills and recognition and reward of employees amongst others.

Scott Millar Account Director at Amey said “As a business we are passionate about supporting and developing the best talent within the industry, and I am delighted that we have been awarded gold status by Investors in People.  Supporting and up skilling our employees has led to a motivated and productive team that is able to deliver for our client.”

Amey was praised for its achievements across five core areas including:-

  • • A culture of positivity
  • • Effective TUPE management
  • • Strong internal values that are genuinely lived and understood
  • • Approach to health and safety - including its Target Zero programme
  • • The Apprenticeship programme which includes partnering with the Duke of Edinburgh and committing to employing 2% of the workforce as Apprentices was recognised to be outstanding.

Tom Bannister, a Highways Maintenance Apprentice said: “I am really glad that Amey is giving me the opportunity to learn new skills. As Apprentices we work alongside experienced Highways Maintenance Operatives, learning from them too.  I am also getting valuable life skills and making new friends on the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.  All this combined with the more traditional learning at College and formal training courses will help me to achieve my Apprenticeship by September 2013.
“I will then move into a permanent role within the Operations team in line with my skills and experience”.

Amey will also become an IiP Gold Champion, providing advice and help for other businesses aiming to achieve the award.

Working with Investors in People is proven to improve financial performance, productivity and profitability. Companies that have achieved the Investors in People Standard also have higher levels of trust, co-operation and commitment than their competitors.
