Amey Helps KickStart Government-Wide Energy Efficiency Drive

Leading public services provider Amey is helping to deliver a pioneering energy management contract for the Home Office which could save the government department £1 million in costs and reduce its carbon footprint.

The Home Office has signed a three-year deal with Amey, which provides FM services at 350 Whitehall buildings; and British Gas – which specialises in maximising the efficiency of buildings.

Together, Amey and British Gas will assess the condition of all existing equipment such as boilers; invest significant sums of money in high performance technologies and provide more accurate monitoring systems. The two companies will be paid on a sliding scale, according to how much money they save the Home Office.

The three year contract is designed to:

  • Reduce the Home Office’s CO2 footprint by 15% over the lifetime of the contract
  • Save up to £1.3M in reduced energy bills
  • Allow Amey and British Gas to invest in the best possible solutions and technologies for the Home Office estate, whilst not increasing capital expenditure for the Home Office
  • Provide better managed offices for civil servants

Helen Kilpatrick, Home Office Commercial and Financial Director General, said: “In the current economic climate we all need to find ways of working more smartly. I believe this new contract will delivery real savings for the taxpayer while helping to protect the environment.

Under the terms of the contract both Amey and British Gas will introduce automatic monitoring and targeting, a service which brings together information use data into a single, clearly presented system which makes it easier to identify opportunities to save money. They will also employ dedicated energy managers whose primary role will be to identify opportunities to save money.

Amey has developed a strong relationship with the Home Office over the last nine years. Energy management is becoming a priority for our clients. This new model of working supports our existing efficiency innovations, such as year-on year cost savings which guarantee price reductions for our customers.”

This contract will go a long way towards helping the Home Office support the Government’s energy-efficiency drive. Today the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has launched a competition for Government departments to see which one does the most during October to reduce energy consumption as a proportion of their energy use.
