Last night, Owen Williams Railways was crowned ‘Growth Business of the Year’ at the 2004 York Evening Press Business Awards at a glittering ceremony at York Racecourse.

In twelve months the company’s York office has gone from zero to £5 million turnover, and recruited 70 members of staff from an initial head count of one after winning a 10-year partnership contract from Network Rail to provide regular inspections of rail structures in the Eastern Region.

Owen Williams’ role involves detailed examinations of bridges, viaducts, tunnels, culverts, equipment and depot structures as well as stations and coastal defences and within a relatively short space of time the it has made a positive impact on the York and surrounding community.

Guests from Network Rail joined the Owen Williams team for an excellent evening of food, drink and entertainment and Helen West, Chief Executive of Business Link York & North Yorkshire presented the award to Divisional Director Paul Marshall

The judges were hugely impressed by what the team in York had achieved from a “standing start” in terms of leadership and strategy, people and processes, and were sure that the offices’ ambition of continued growth of £1M per year would be achieved.

After receiving the award Paul commented “ This is a fantastic success for everyone. We have all achieved an enormous amount over the 18 months through hard work and teamwork.  I’m delighted Owen Williams Railways have been declared overall winner and for being recognised for our achievement."

Owen Williams Group Chief Executive, Richard Williams added his congratulations “This award is yet another feather in the cap for Owen Williams and is testament of our staff’s commitment. I congratulate every single one of the staff in the York office for their hard work and support that was publicly recognised tonight”.
