Keith Sexton, Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director

Keith Sexton, Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director, joined Amey in 2000. He leads on Amey’s health, safety and environmental policies, ensuring that the organisation meets its corporate objective to be recognised as world class in all aspects of safety, health and environmental management.

Keith began his career working for the Health and Safety Executive, with responsibility for the enforcement of UK Health and Safety at Work legislation.

He then moved into the oil and gas industry working for the British National Oil Corporation before joining Shell International Petroleum in 1982. Keith spent 13 years with Shell predominantly in the fields of safety engineering and risk assessment.

Moving to United Utilities Plc., Keith worked as Group Manager for Safety, Health and Environment Affairs, with responsibility for providing Group strategy, policy and direction in those fields. He was instrumental in raising the company’s ranking on the BiE Index of Corporate Environmental Engagement.

As Group Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Director at Amey, Keith has led a major change programme to instil a safety culture across the organisation. Recognition of Amey’s structured approach in these areas has resulted in certification to the International Standards for Quality, Environment and Safety (ISO 9001, 1401 and BS OHSAS 18001), and more importantly led to a reduction in the accident incident rate to the lowest level since records were kept.

Keith is driving the agenda of environment and climate change and notably helped to raise Amey to ‘Gold Band’ status within the BITC Environment Index. Keith recognises the challenges that companies face as the environment agenda explodes and hopes to position Amey as a company who can demonstrate best practice in this area.

Keith is ambitious about raising the profile of Amey’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and hopes that by capturing and sharing best practice of our CSR credentials Amey will further strengthen their position in the market. For the last 3 years Amey have ranked as one of “100 Companies that Count’ in the BITC Corporate Responsibility Index.

Keith’s expertise in the arena of Health and Safety has also been evidenced in his role as Chair of the CBI Health and Safety Panel. In this capacity he has given evidence to the House of Commons DWP select committee on the work of the HSC/HSE, and to the Hampton review on UK regulatory reform. He is also a member of the advisory group of the EU Risk Observatory in Bilbao.

Keith has a first degree in Engineering, a Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and a Masters Degree in Environmental Management. He is a Fellow of both the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Institute of Environmental Management, and a Chartered Environmentalist.

In his spare time Keith plays golf and enjoys running.
