Description
In April 2007 Amey commenced a £240 million contract for Transport for London (TfL) to provide highway maintenance and improvements across north London. The contract, employing around 340 people, is initially for six years, with annual extensions up to ten years.
Amey delivers highway maintenance services for the Red Routes across North London. Our services include: the repair and renewal of roads and pavements, lighting, drainage, signage, landscaping, winter maintenance and many other functions.
The road network we maintain is approximately 220km long. It includes major routes such as the North Circular, A40, A4 and major arterial routes to the M25. Within the network we have:
- 18,000 lighting columns
- 137 subways
- 76 footbridges
- 450 structures
- 3 tunnels.
The routes we maintain lead to a number of major venues including Wembley Stadium, Heathrow Airport and a number of the sites for the 2012 Olympic games.
Efficiencies
We recognise London suffers high levels of congestion throughout the day, every day. Forward planning, co-ordination and prompt response to emergencies are all important tools for minimising congestion.
As part of the contract we have introduced incident response units and are operating a state of the art 24/7 operational control room (OCR). The OCR is the “hub” of our highways maintenance activities, our emergency response and winter maintenance activities are coordinated from there. It is equipped with the latest communications technology, and staffed by a multi-skilled team led by our Network Co-ordinator. Our vehicles have Global Positioning System (GPS) on board so control room operators can quickly mobilise the closest units to an incident.
In addition, we have adopted a “right-first-time” approach. Through our Network Management team we ensure that:
- All works are carried out in such a way as to minimise their impact on congestion
- Works are well signed and guarded
- The needs of all travellers, especially pedestrians, cyclists and the disabled are provided for.
Our culture means that our employees are the “eyes and ears” of TfL on the network, helping to proactively identify current and potential network congestion hotspots.
We are at the forefront of London’s quest to become more environmentally friendly we are introducing a number of initiatives and new vehicles.
The ‘green’ vehicles we are using include Modec electric vehicles which have zero CO2 emissions. We also supply TfL with four Toyota Prius vehicles which are proven to have the lowest CO2 emissions worldwide and ten Astra LPG powered vehicles to reduce emissions.
