Innovations
Sustainability initiatives to reduce Amey's carbon footprint
A significant impact was made through the installation of a Powerperfector voltage regulator in July 2008, which reduced consumption of electricity at Sherard Building by an average of approximately 15% within the first year. Following this successful trial, Amey is looking at other opportunities to employ this technology to improve energy management at both its own and client buildings.
Amey has further reduced power consumption through a number of best practice measures including:
- Adjustment of timers on ZIP taps so water is only heated/cooled when buildings are occupied
- Ensuring equipment, including vending machines and printers are turned off out of working hours
- Adjusting server room cooling to maintain 21 degrees rather than 18 degrees
- Adjusted controls on heating and ventilation systems to closely reflect building use patterns
- Light level controls on car park lighting
Other measures which have been successfully introduced to reduce Amey’s impact on the environment include:
- An Environmental awareness program
- Promotion of greener travel, including Cycle to Work and Car Share schemes.
- Introducing central waste/recycle station in place of desk-side bins
- Recycling of food waste by a wormery
- Electric Smart cars for essential local journeys
- Shutting down key office during holiday periods to reduce the environmental impact at a time of low business activity
- The use of water free urinals
- Gas boiler optimisation technology
