Renfrewshire schools

The Renfrewshire Schools PPP contract began in August 2006. It covers total facilities management of 10 schools in the Renfrewshire area. The PPP is made up of Amey, Carillion and The Bank of Scotland.

The contract came about as part of Renfrewshire council’s project to improve the quality of schools and nurseries over a 10-year period. Amey was announced as preferred bidder in March 2005.

10 new build schools will provide an education environment to 7,000 children. Carillion, our building partner, started construction in January 2005.

The contract has two phases. Phase one saw the first four schools being built: Todholm Primary and three Secondary Schools; St Andrew’s Academy, St Benedict’s High and Gleniffer High School.

Phase two will see a further six locations being completed: five primary school locations; Fordbank, Glencoats, Woodlands and West Johnston shared campus, and one secondary, Linwood High School.

Amey provides total facilities management services to the schools which includes Cleaning, Janitorial, Catering, building maintenance, security and grounds maintenance.

When the contract began, many of our staff were TUPE transferred from Renfrewshire Council and now benefit from Amey’s belief in training and development. The Senior Janitor from Gleniffer High school was seconded across the business as an Assistant Facilities Manager to gain greater knowledge of the contract and an overview of managing the services to several schools. Members of the catering team have also had the opportunity to work on the mobilisation of other catering contracts utilising their knowledge and expertise.

Elements of the contract services have already seen major change. Catering has now changed to self delivery and has been marketed to the pupils through a brand called Reload. Amey is helping to transform school dining into a healthy, enjoyable experience.

By introducing a Palm Vein Scanner to Todholm Primary School and enabling a cashless catering system that de-stigmatises free meal eligibility, Amey is positioning itself a the leading edge of the market.

Amey’s service to schools in Renfrewshire is only a year old but is going from strength to strength.
