Harry Caswell is a Business Development Assistant. He joined Amey in March 2007 on the Graduate Leadership Programme.
I joined Amey in March 2007. I expected flexibility when I joined the scheme, but I’m amazed by all the opportunities there are to experience different areas of the business and develop my skills.
My first placement was in Business Development in our Built Environment division, based at Amey's Head Office in Oxford. Working alongside the Business Development Manager, I divide my time between customer account plans and analysing areas in which Amey can strengthen our service offering and add value to our contracts. I’ve been extremely fortunate to work on some really exciting projects, at an innovative time in our business.
From the outset it was clear how much time and effort has been invested in the graduates that join the business. I’m confident that the challenging and rewarding training programme will give me the skills I need for the future. There’s also a really supportive network of people that are passionate about developing the graduates they employ. Which is a good thing, considering all the questions that I had at the beginning of my placement!
For me, it’s important that I work for a company that makes every effort to get involved in the community. All the Graduates are encouraged to participate in fundraising for our corporate charity and work in partnership with local schools on projects to develop the students’ business awareness.
Amey is a business that’s constantly changing and growing. And in a way that’s how I feel about my own journey through the business. After only a short while, I’ve developed in my thinking and the skills that I can bring to the role.
I look forward to building on my experience within other business areas over the next two years of the Graduate scheme. I'm particularly interested in pursuing a placement within a contract to gain an insight into the operational side of the business and be at the front end of our exceptional customer service.
What stands out for me at Amey is the little things. As a new employee I was made to feel welcome from day one and surprised by how quickly people began to know my name. I feel very positive about my future with Amey.
