Renfrewshire Schools

Description

Amey works in partnership with Renfrewshire Council as part of their overall educational commitment to provide secondary, primary and nursery education to over 7,000 children in ten brand new schools. Our Facilities Management (FM) service within the schools incorporates the provision of cleaning, janitorial, catering, building maintenance, security and grounds maintenance services.

This contract was awarded as part of Renfrewshire Council’s project to improve the quality of schools and nurseries over a ten year period. Amey was announced as preferred bidder in March 2005.

This contract consisted of two phases. Phase one saw the first four schools being built: Todholm Primary and three Secondary Schools; St Andrew’s Academy, St Benedict’s High and Gleniffer High School. Phase two saw a further six locations being completed: five primary schools; Fordbank, Glencoats, Woodlands and West Johnston shared campus, and one secondary, Linwood High School.

Some elements of our contracted services have already seen major changes. Catering is now self-delivered and is being marketed to the pupils through a brand called "Reload". Amey is proud to be helping to transform school dining into a healthy, enjoyable experience.

Amey’s service to schools in Renfrewshire is only four years old, but we are proud to say that it is going from strength to strength.

Innovations

Reload is a healthy school meals initiative that has become an essential ingredient in Amey’s school catering contracts in Scotland. The Reload catering brand, developed and self-delivered by Amey, has been so successful that it is now used by catering teams in schools in Northampton and Speke in Liverpool.

Reload involves all stakeholders and encourages a whole school, whole child approach in promoting healthy options to children. Amey instigated procurement deals with local suppliers, resulting in meals prepared from fresh local produce and based on “meal deals” specials. Each meal has fruit, drink, salad or vegetables and bread, with chips on offer only once per week. The brand is appealing to children as it offers a more sophisticated approach to school meals, and the design is modern and contemporary with a sense of high-street style service.

Electronic display screens show daily menus that promote healthy eating and healthy living messages, and there are also incentive schemes where the children can collect loyalty points.

As well as the meals, there are “healthy” vending machines, serviced by catering staff, and stocked with products that are in line with guidance from the School’s Food Trust and DfES.

The quality of school meals has improved, meeting government targets and helping ensure a healthy lifestyle for school children. The use of local suppliers is cheaper and supports the local economy, as well as reducing “food miles” and leading to fresher produce. With its up-beat image, Reload has encouraged children to see healthy food in a positive light, and take up of school meals has remained high.
