Calderdale Highways

Description

This Highways Term Maintenance Contract sees Amey working in partnership to deliver highways services, street lighting and winter maintenance across the 1090 km road network within the Calderdale Metropolitan Borough. Services include routine maintenance, minor works, Local Transport Plan improvements and provision of emergency response gangs.

Efficiency

A Profit Share Plan introduced in 2003 has generated average annual savings of £25,000 per year, which has been returned to Calderdale Council. This money is used to fund further highway improvement works, benefiting residents, visitors and road users alike.

At the end of 2003 Amey returned £44,000 to Calderdale MBC. We returned £41,000 in 2004, £29,000 in 2005 and £1,000 for 2006.

From 2007, the contract was extended on an annual basis and Amey pledged to undertake a community improvement scheme worth up to £20,000 per annum at no cost to the Council for each year the contract is extended.

Innovation

From 2002, we have consistently built our turnover by expanding the services we offer and introducing innovative products and solutions. Examples include:

  • Rhinopatch - a permanent sustainable method of surface repairs
  • Rubber speed cushions formed from recycled car and commercial vehicle tyres, reducing our environmental impact
  • Product trials with environmentally-friendly cleaners to remove bitumen from surfacing plant, which has driven down costs.

Outcome

Amey has built a reputation for delivering first-time quality solutions. Dave Tee, Calderdale Council’s Highways Manager, said: "There are no quality issues here at all – it’s as good a job as we’ve ever done before."

To demonstrate our commitment to offering the highest levels of customer service, in 2010 Calderdale won a silver award in the national Considerate Constructors’ Scheme – a voluntary initiative to improve the image, impact and service delivery of the construction process. By registering Calderdale with the Scheme, we encourage best practice and ensure  we act with consideration towards our neighbours and the environment.
